Another World

Chapter 1:

The Corner of Your Eye

     Ten years had past from the time Mark crossed worlds into Bakersville.  Many stories were written, many acquaintances made, and many mysterious adventures yet to embark on. Mark was known to everyone as one to shy away from adventure, but his friend Bubble, who was a young girl, wasn't.

"Mark! what are you doing?  I'm board and we need something to do other than read all day in the library!" She exclaimed in agitation.       

 "Well," Mark replied. 

"I'm always the last person for you to come to when you're bored, so this is probably serious.  I thought you didn't like adventure?" He said mockingly.   Her face flushed to a red color as she recanted,     

"I am too one for adventure!  If you think that you have good adventure, then let's see it Mr brag-a-lot!"    

"Hold on," he returned.  

"I need to finish this chapter."    

"OH PLEASE,"  Bubble dragged Mark out of the building while he stared with a blank stare on his face.     

"I was so close to figuring out the big cliffhanger.  Yet, you pull me out of the library and no....  No amazing resolution for me."     

"You can handle yourself," Bubble said as she rolled her eyes.     

"Now, how about that adventure?"     

"You see," Mark continued.  

"My kind of adventure is not like yours.  I hunt shadows."     Bubble seemed uninterested, but she had nothing else to do so she continued to listen.     

"Think of somewhere in Bakersville that is darker than the rest of the world.  Not the abandoned mansion, that won't count for right now.  You're not that level."  He winked as he finished speaking as if to gloat about him knowing something that she didn't understand.      

"Umm, well, ahh, how am I suppose to know!?"   

"You asked for adventure."     

"Well I wanted you to come up with the adventure." She rambled.     

"Fine then, join me."     

     They traveled to one of the famous rich ladies public houses to find a normal scenery of the most perfect green grass you would see anywhere else in all of Bakersville.  The flowers were properly tended to and nothing was dead.  The soft breeze in the air whispered through the trees, soon to die from the oncoming winter.  The two looked around for unnaturally placed shadows until...  

"Come over here Bubble." Mark said to interrupt the stillness in the air.  Bubble rushed over, eager for some action.     "Now, can you see that shadow over there?"  He pointed behind the fountain beside her house.     

"Yeah, it's probably from the trees around the shadow, why?"     

"If that shadow is from the trees, then why are all the trees so far away from it?"     The wind picked up.  The grass that was covered in shadow did not move like the rest of the grass, it stayed perfectly still in frozen confinement.  The two of them looked at each other.  Not once in her life did Bubble ever notice this in all of Bakersville whatsoever.  Her face grew direly pale as she shook from hearing this from Mark.     

"Mark, how on earth is that possible?  I've lived in Bakersville for way longer than you and yet I am just noticing this now?!"     Mark replied by nodding his head while he looked up into the sky above the shadow.     Frustrated, Bubble spoke out, 

"What are you looking at!?"    

 "I'm looking at the thing that's casting the shadow...." He replied gravely.     Bubble became confused since no object or person stood over the strange looking shadow.  Mark came close to the shadow, took off one of his gloves that he was wearing, and put his hand out.  This baffled Bubble, because once he did that the shadow disappeared.  It was gone.

     After this event, Mark invited Bubble to his sky home to see the shadow statues face to face.     

"When we go up there, do three things.  First, make the penguins happy.  That means dance with them since they keep the shadow statues up there.  Second, don't do anything until I say you can.  And third, do not pass the penguins no matter what you do."  Mark said these things with great seriousness in his voice.  Bubble nodded her head in response.  Once on the cloud, all Bubble saw were two ice penguins dancing happily on their ice cube.  They were so gleeful; always so filled with joy. It would make someone have a true, happy smile to see one and they would want to pick it up and cuddle it all night.     

"Mark?  There are no shadows up here, or anything for that matter.  Just penguins dancing...on....ice...."     

"Then how about you see the shadows.  When I tell you to, carry out my instructions.  Listen to the wind carefully and look through the corner of your eye in the very direction your looking.  Only then will you be able to see them."  Mark quickly added,  

"I will warn you, once you see them, you will always see them everywhere."     Bubble was not concerned for that matter at all and did not heed his warning.  She listened and heard whispers; dark shady whispers of secrets not yet revealed to mankind.  She turned around and looked through the corner of her eye to behold hundreds upon hundreds of shadows............Shadow statues

Chapter 2:

Being Taught A Lesson

     "BUT NOTHING WAS THERE AND NOW SOMETHING IS THERE AND NOW I'M CONFUSED AND SCARED AND......AND....." 

Bubble went on and on about how she never saw anything like this in her life while she lived in Bakersville.  She rambled about her staying longer than Mark like she did earlier.  She paced back and forth while Mark was just looking at her awkwardly and just simply replying with yup, uh huh, and yes to keep her occupied.  While she muttered, Mark checked his watch and noticed the time.  He had only minutes to make it to his next session with magic.  Nervously, he interrupted Bubble, 

"Bubble, i'm late for something of extreme importance.  You can choose to stay up here and ramble on to yourself or you can let me walk you to the door of my garden and I will be on my merry way."     

Bubble retorted, 

"What could possibly be more important than listening to my problems and my lectures about me, being clearly better than you and not seeing these 'magic beings' all around Bakersville?!"     

"How about a strict teacher who will slap me a lot if i'm late?"     

Bubble cocked her head sideways and was puzzled that Mark had classes on the weekend.     

"Well I have a birthday next weekend so at least remember that in everything that you do.  I expect you to take me to the abandoned mansion and have an adventure there AND for you to actually plan a normal side activity to do."     

Mark rolled his eyes.  

"I can try, i'm awful busy so don't blame me if I forget."     

     Mark ran as fast as he could to his secret lessons.  That was where he knew how to use magic, or at least try to.  He met the teacher one day and she noticed something about him that made him special from other people.  Mark burst into the room with only seconds to spare on the clock.     

"You are late Mark." She growled.     

"I am most certainly not!  It has just turned five o'clock and yet you say i'm late?!  No sir-i!  I am on time!"     

"And that's what made you late.  Not being early.  Now sit down like everyone else."     Mark took a seat as the teacher came up to him and whacked him over the head with a long metal stick.     

"OW!  What in the world was that for!?" He yelped.     

"For your attitude and tartiness.  Don't be late again or I will remove you out of the class."     

     Many times, their teacher would pick out which people to personally train in magic, which was what she was doing now.  Only this time, she would only pick one apprentice out of the entire class.  There were 12 students in the class.  Most of them were experienced magicians while others were just there since their parents could pay for them to get in.  Mark got lucky, because the teacher picked him to be the free student of the year.  Their teacher told them to make a simple fire-shot while Mark stood in the corner.  Never in his life had Mark ever used magic.  To make things worse, he turned 16 in a few months.     

"Mrs. August?" Mark asked.     

"I don't know why I have not been able to use my magic.  I have tried and the only thing I can do is just see magical creatures and that's it!"

     Mark was downcast that day.  He didn't want to inform the teacher of him being able to move shadow statues from one place to the other, since their teacher spoke of how shadows and shadow statues alike were evil and deadly.     

"Well, it can mean three things.  Either you have not discovered that you have magic, which you already know that you have magic.  You could be very special, and I seriously doubt that.  Or maybe your magic is just too weak.  I have my thoughts that it's the third option."     

"Hey!" Mark angrily replied.     

"But this is my opinion Mark.  I am not sure what it is.  Many normal people usually get their diamond mark, which is the most common and normal under-leveled wizard mark, or their lightning bolt mark.  You don't have one yet."     

     Mrs. Autumn took off his glove and looked again.  There was still nothing there.  Mark, overcome with disappointment, left the class.  He knew the lesson would be about using magic that day instead of learning of the magic realm.  Grief clouded him like a rainy day.  He traveled to the abandoned house to clear his head.  He closed his eyes and dozed off to the sound of voices in a whispered tone.  The voices said, 

"The boy must never discover his powers.  He would be almost impossible to rid of once he knew what he was."  

"Of course." The other voice replied.     

"Besides, he is the perfect combination of darkness and raw power.  The combination the Shadow Wizard needs to conquer all of this world.  Since the Shadow Wizard defeated the world of original ancient magic first, there is no one else left to defend this world."

Chapter 3  A Night To Remember

Mark opened his eyes slowly.  He was not where he fell asleep.  He was in a very large room with tall windows that stretched to the ceiling.  There were two large men guarding a chair.  Mark assumed there was a man in the chair, but the chair was turn towards the fireplace.     

"Greetings Mark," the man in the chair started.     

"It is a honor to meet such a young man like you, here."    

 "Who are you?!  Why do you want me?" Mark responded in a troubled tone.    

 "Oh tsk tsk Mark, that's not how you meet your old friend from the past.  Well, then again, somewhat of a friend.  Let's just say a blast from the past."     

Mark was startled to hear the man speak of things he never knew about.....never knew about yet.     

"You see, i'm from your future and I would rather put an end to our little meetings here and now before you begin meddling with any more of my plans.  I have decided to rid you of the world permanently this time.  So, shall we begin the process?"

Chapter 3

A Night To Remember

     Mark had forgotten how much he hated to sleep.  He always dreamt of the most disturbing images.  He would always see a great wall of shadows building up into a dark oblivion and only two people fighting for their lives.  He viewed the battle while his view faded into darkness.  Mark opened his eyes slowly.  He was not where he fell asleep.  He was in a very large room with tall windows that stretched to the ceiling.  There were two big men guarding a chair.  Mark assumed there was a man in the chair, but the chair was turn towards the fireplace.

Chapter 4

Only The Beginning

     Mark stared at his hand to witness the birth of the mark of magic.  His mark was neither a simple diamond, nor a lightning bold.  It was a black dragon.     

"This is not possible!  I have never been able to unlock my magic for years on end and i'm just getting them now?"     The dragon softly replied, 

"Dragon masters have very great power.  Yet, your mark is that of a black dragon.  These dragons are commonly known as shadow dragons.  You have much to learn about your past.  There are many dangers soon to come.  Take Zerce for instance.  He is a very skilled magician and hates his magic.  He will stop at nothing to end things here and now with you.  For your sake, I will aid in you escaping from here."     

The great dragon walked up to him and touched his mark.  In merely a blink of an eye, he vanished.  Mark looked around.     

"Where did you go?  I thought you said you would help."     

"And help I will do.  I have entered into the mark in your hand.  The only way for me to truly help you, is if you lend me your magic for a while so that I can help us escape."     

"How can I trust a dragon that I just met?"     

"Because you had entrusted me with the one thing you have never told anyone."     

The dragon whispered something and Mark stood motionless.  

"Ok, I trust you then.  Now, what do I do?"     

"Take a deep breath, close your eyes, and focus."   

     

     Time resumed again.  The two large men and Zerce looked over to Mark.  Zerce became enraged and threw one of the men to the ground.     

"I THOUGHT HE HAD NO MAGIC AROUND THIS TIME IN HIS PAST!  YOU FOOLS!" Zerce angrily yelled.     

He was so enraged with them about Mark being able to teleport from the chair to across the room.  Zerce continued to yell until he noticed Mark sitting still with his eyes closed.  From experience, Zerce unfortunately knew what happened next.  Zerce charged Mark and Mark stood up and stopped him with his magic.  Mark opened his eyes.  His eyes were no longer their original color, they glowed a bright white.  Mark pushed Zerce against the wall with his magic and knocked out the two large men quickly.  He flew out and stood at the gates of the abandoned mansion.  The dragon left from inside his mark and his eyes ceased to glow.     

"Until you find me in accordance to your time line, you need only to call me to help you in any situation."     

Mark stopped and replied with a thanks to the dragon.     

"The mark on your hand is not suppose to appear until you are ready.  Because there was no choice, you now have your mark early.  Many things can happen when this occurs.  Be very careful when using any forms of magic, because your magic is much more powerful than millions of fellow wizards out there."     

With that, the dragon vanished into the surrounding air.  Mark, observing the sky, knew he was about to be late for his very first class.....of school.

     Mark dashed for the door, but he was just seconds late for class.     

"Good morning Mr. Mark. Your late, again." Mr. Christopher began.     

"Must I count how many times you have been late, let alone the times you skipped class."     

"But, I was up all night doing...." Mark's voice trailed off.     

Mr. Christopher glared at him until Mark nodded his head and sat down.  The first class of misery monday was in session.  Last night didn't help with his pop-quiz on Algebra II at all.  He sat down for lunch at the no-talking-allowed table to see Bubble hanging out with her friends at another table.  Despite what most people thought of his looks and character, Mark tried to stay out of most drama and trouble in the school.  Mark wished for something adventurous on a lower level than what happened last night to happen this time.  Even though adventure was soon to arrive at his school, this level of adventure was far more dangerous than the events of that night.

Chapter 5

Unexpected Acquaintances

     After lunch, it was time for chemistry.  Mark hated this class the most since there were three crazy people that always blew stuff up at any chance they could.  It was the adventure for the day at that school.  On his way to class, Mark noticed a girl in a black hoodie sitting in the corner of the long hallway.  Everyone passed her rushing to their classes.  As soon as everyone was in their class, Mark approached her and started, 

"Hey, are you ok?"     

The girl shrugged and continued to stair down at the floor.  She looked up slowly and pulled the sleeves of her jacket over her arms and hands closely as if she was hiding something.  She appeared like one of the many students there that didn't have a home.

"Well, if you won't talk, i'm Mark.  If you need any help or don't have a place to stay, please feel free to come by my house for some food or something; or even to have someone to help with anything.  Maybe even a place to sleep for a night or two."     

Mark handed her a piece of paper.  He looked concerned at her and hoped for her to be alright.

     After Mark had entered chemistry and finished his day of school, it was back to Mrs Autumn's class.  Today, their lesson was about the element of wind.     

"Now, I want you to practice breathing in and then letting the air out."     

One of the arrogant wizards, who had a lightning bold mark, named Jacob spoke up, 

"Aren't we suppose to do that all day everyday in order to live?"     

The entire class chuckled except for Miss Autumn and Mark.     

"Of course Jacob, and that's why you will be the first person to perfectly demonstrate this next wind move."     

Mrs Autumn got into a pose of elegance and blew out of her mouth to create a miniature tornado that whisked through on of the girls hair and knocked only one hair out of place.     

"No problem!"     

Jacob blew out of his mouth and all that came out was hot air from his big head.  The class once again chuckled noticeably louder than before.  Mark looked down at his hands, closed his eyes, and blew out air from his mouth.  It made a gentle breeze through the room carrying a peaceful song in it.  Mrs Autumn stopped everything she was doing and sharply questioned, 

"Which one of you did that?!"     

Dead silence filled the air.  Mark spoke up, 

"Um, well,"     

"I did it!!!!" Jacob snorted.  

Mrs Autumn looked impressed at him and said, 

"Very very few wizards could ever do something like that.  To carry a message or a song through the wind takes years of practice and yet this is a new concept to all of you."  Mrs Autumn took him aside and that concluded the end of class.

     Mark was still timid about speaking to anyone of his new found mark on his hand.  He sat on his front porch watching it.  The black dragon on his hand gave him chills down his spine.     

"Why do I have to have such a mark like this?  Why can't I just be some normal average kid, who plays and hangs out with his friends like the rest of the world?"     

Mark dropped his head down and tears filled his eyes.     

"Why can't my parents come back for me....... Why did they have to be killed..."     

With that being said, he cleared his eyes of the tears that filled them and entered into his house.  He looked over on the couch and saw the girl with the black jacket on his couch.  She was doing something Mark would have never expected.....magic
